About Emma's Surrender...

When twenty-year-old Emma Brookstone arrives in the town of Bannack, Montana, she seeks out the local marshal, intending to enlist his help in uncovering the truth regarding her father’s murder two years earlier. Upon meeting the marshal, however, she is shocked and dismayed to discover that he is none other than the man who gunned her father down that fateful night.

Though Clive Brookstone was an evil man who needed killing, the knowledge that he left a young woman orphaned tore at Nathan Haskin’s conscience from the moment he pulled the trigger, and he has secretly provided for Emma’s needs since that day. “Come here.” He snapped his fingers and pointed to the spot on the floor next to his right leg.

Just like that her anger evaporated, replaced by anxiety. “Why?” she asked in a small, whining voice.

“Because I ordered you to. I expect you to obey my orders, remember?”

She stared at him, wide-eyed and worried.

“One…” His voice was soft and level, but screamed danger.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered, her anxiety growing.

“Two…”

Emma didn’t know how high he intended to count, or what would happen if he reached his intended number, nor did she know what he was going to do with her once she walked to him, but she decided it was safest to obey immediately. She stood and hustled to him before he said “three.”

He pointed at the floor again. “Kneel.”

She wasn’t surprised by his command as much as hurt. Like the corner, the placement was humiliating. She dropped to her knees and looked up at him. Despite her best intentions not to cry, she felt her eyes growing moist. It wasn’t fair that he should be so strict with her, when all she wanted was information. “Why are you punishing me? I didn’t do anything wrong.”

He cupped her head, then raked his fingers down the length of her dark hair. The touch was so tender that Emma felt herself relaxing.

“I’m not punishing you, pet. I’m teaching you submission. You must submit to me. It doesn’t come easily to you, but it’s what you must learn.”

. “I feel awful. Just awful.” The anger from earlier, the feeling of helplessness, and the weight that saddled my shoulders seemed insurmountable. I wanted to climb into bed and pull the quilt over my head. I wanted to never get out of that bed again. I deserved to be punished for such a wicked act against my closest friend, and the guilt I felt was consuming me. I covered my face with my hands, tears seeping through my fingers. “She's so good to me,” I choked, as the tears flowed. “She's with child, and  I struck her. What a wicked, wicked thing. I feel so guilty, Samuel,” I said to him. “I ought to be whipped for such a thing.”

His arms came around me then, and he pulled me into his chest. One large hand stroked my hair as he held me. “I wouldn't say whipped,” he said, and his voice was softer than I expected. “But little Ruth, I've long since thought that my hand across your backside would do you a world of good.”
